Window Blinds – How to choose the right Ones

Window blinds have about every style and color imaginable and they are made to fit just about any type of window – how do you select the ones that are right for your room?  It helps to know some of the features of blinds:

• Light filtering or blackout
• Insulated to save energy costs
• Easy to clean
• Safe for kids (cordless blinds)
• Reasonable cost

Once you decide on the room and features that you are looking for, you will find the type of window blinds that are right for you.  Window blinds come in wood, composite, aluminum, or vertical and are offered in a variety of colors and textures.  Window blinds can enhance your room in a unique way that is visually pleasing and functional.

When you are selecting window treatments the first thing you need to do is consider function – what are the needs in the room?

• Decorative
• Total Darkness/Light Filtering
• Thermal/Unlined
• Privacy

Next, consider the style that best fits your room:

• Contemporary
• Traditional
• Country
• Eclectic

Color, pattern and texture are also important.  Once you decide on the function and style of the window treatments consider the style of the windows and the entire room – are there lots of colors or busy patterns in the room?  If so, you may want to use simple window treatments.  If your room is very neutral, you may want to use more decorative window treatments.  Window treatments will tie everything together and put the finishing touches on your room.

• Hire movers for the large or fragile items – plan this six weeks in advance.

• Use a checklist and a color coded floor plan with matching labels for your boxes.
• Take a photo of your computer and TV/DVD set up to easily reconnect after the move.
• Move heavy books in a rolling suitcase and wrap garbage bags around clothes from the closet – still on the hanger.
• Use a clear bin for first day essentials – trash bags, dish soap, cleaning items, coffee and coffee pot, etc.
